What does this index measure?

The combined cost of every product MOPRI has ever published a controlled price for, chain-linked at every genuine price change and expressed relative to its first recorded value (100). It is a real, computed figure — one unit of each controlled staple, not an expenditure-weighted basket.

Is this MOPRI's official inflation figure, or the CPI?

Accepted Answer

No. MOPRI's own Basket of Goods survey (450+ products across ~46 outlets) could support its own index, but its public data feed currently returns no usable product data. This is also not Statistics Mauritius's official Consumer Price Index (see stats.cyber.mu). This is cyber.mu's own index, computed only over the 9 legally price-capped controlled staples.

Why doesn't the index move when a new product is added?

Accepted Answer

The index is chain-linked: a product's first-ever appearance in the basket is never compared against a price it didn't previously have, so the basket getting bigger can't by itself move the index. From the next recorded change onward, the new product counts like any other.
